P.R.: Do it yourself or hire a pro?

Financial and technical forces are squeezing the news media — bad news in many ways, but not for folks trying to publicize their causes and products.
When it comes to news releases and other publicity, many news sites now will let you do it yourself. That way, they save on labor and you get your information broadcast.
The steps are pretty easy.
1) Write a news release yourself. Keep it simple, avoid jargon and remember that you’re writing for consumers, not industry insiders. Write a few paragraphs, not an encyclopedia.
2) Search the news site for directions on how to submit items.
3) Send in your release, remembering to include contact information if people have questions.
Option B: Hire a professional public relations person and get it done bigger and better, for not a whole lot of money.
